The environmental case for plant-based eating: From forests to the sea

The conversation about climate action often focuses on energy, transport, and industry—but one of the most powerful levers for environmental change sits quietly on our plates. Moving toward a more plant-based diet isn’t just a personal health choice; it’s a meaningful way to reduce pressure on ecosystems, protect biodiversity, and slow the damage being done to both land and ocean environments. Two issues in particular—deforestation and the expansion of oceanic dead zones—show how heavily the meat industry can shape the planet’s future.

Forests: The hidden cost of meat

Deforestation is frequently driven by agriculture, and livestock production plays a major role. Forests are cleared not only to create grazing land for cattle but also to grow feed crops like soy and corn. While soy is often associated with plant-based foods, the reality is that much of it is grown to feed animals—not people. The result is a system that uses far more land than necessary to produce the same amount of food energy humans could get directly from plants.

When forests are cleared, we lose more than trees. Forests store huge amounts of carbon, regulate rainfall, stabilize soil, and provide homes for countless species. When they’re destroyed, carbon that took decades to store is released into the atmosphere, accelerating climate change. Biodiversity collapses as habitats disappear, and local communities who depend on forests often suffer too. Reducing demand for animal products can decrease the economic pressure to convert forests into farmland—and that means protecting one of Earth’s most important carbon sinks.

Oceans: Dead zones and the meat supply chain

The environmental impact doesn’t stop at land. The meat industry also fuels one of the most alarming oceanic threats: the growing number of dead zones—areas of the ocean so depleted of oxygen that marine life can’t survive. These zones are largely caused by nutrient runoff, especially nitrogen and phosphorus, from fertilized fields and animal waste.

Here’s how it works: industrial farming uses massive amounts of fertilizer to grow feed crops. Rain washes excess nutrients into rivers, which eventually flow into the ocean. When these nutrients reach coastal waters, they trigger huge algae blooms. As the algae die and decompose, oxygen is consumed, leaving the surrounding water unable to support fish, shellfish, or plant life. Some dead zones become permanent, devastating fisheries and threatening food security for coastal communities.

Animal agriculture also contributes directly through manure. Large-scale livestock operations produce staggering volumes of waste—often more than ecosystems can absorb safely. When manure leaks into waterways, it intensifies nutrient pollution and speeds up the dead-zone cycle.

A shift that matters

Transitioning toward a plant-based diet doesn’t require perfection. Even reducing meat intake—choosing plant-based meals a few times a week—can lower land use, cut pollution, and reduce the demand driving deforestation and nutrient runoff. It’s one of the rare climate actions that benefits ecosystems in multiple directions at once: forests stay standing, rivers run cleaner, and oceans keep breathing.

Ultimately, eating more plants isn’t just about what we remove from our plates. It’s about what we protect: wild landscapes, thriving oceans, and the delicate balance of life that sustains us all.
